Announcing: The Worst Tax Evader of the Year

Richard Hatch (seen at right) won the dubious achievement as “the people’s choice” for 2006 Taxpayer of the Year. But Wesley Snipes made a strong run.

And the nominees are…1. Snipes — actor turned tax theorist.
2. Hatch — who survived Survivor but was done in by a sharp IRS agent who saw him win $1 million on TV and not report it.
3. Marrita Murphy — who inspired a court case that’s a tax geek’s dream.
Tommie Underwood — ex-IRS agent who claimed his dead father-in-law as a dependent.
4. Walter Anderson — the telecom millionaire, “anarcho-capitalist,” and now covicted tax evader.
5. Ruth Harrell — who deducted $5,625 for cleaning her husband’s UPS uniforms because that’s how much she estimated having them cleaned professionally would cost.
6. Treasury Secretary Paulson — “who took a big pay cut, but gets to diversify his portfolio tax-free.”
7. David Guardino — the clairvoyant who should have predicted his conviction.

I was rooting for Wesley Snipes: File Under NUTS!.
