Bishop, Hanley move up. Cote sets retirement.
The National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) has announced two executive promotions — one new chief operating officer of NASBA and one president and CEO position of the organization’s subsidiary Professional Credential Services (PCS).
Ken Bishop, who joined NASBA in 2007, has been promoted to chief operating officer (COO) and will continue in his role as senior vice president. Former COO and current executive vice president, Joseph T. Cote, CPA, will retire from his post effective January 1, 2011.
Former vice president of PCS, Denise Hanley, has been promoted to president and CEO. Hanley will succeed Bishop in this position.
“In keeping with our objective to make leadership changes as smoothly and effectively as possible, we want to make the COO change now so that Ken and Joe will have much time and opportunity to keep the COO function dynamic, responsive, and forward looking,” said David Costello, CPA, president and CEO of NASBA.
Under Bishop’s leadership, NASBA has made significant strides in enhancing the awareness and passing the adoption of mobility legislation among the 55 state boards of accountancy. He has also been instrumental in the development of an international CPA Examination delivery model.
Bishop, a graduate of the University of Missouri Columbia and Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government Executive Program, has served as past chairman of the NASBA CPA Mobility Task Force, the CPA Examination Administration Committee and the NASBA Executive Directors Committee. Additionally, he has served on the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) Board of Examiners.
“Ken has a rich administrative and business background and he has demonstrated his managerial and leadership skills well in PCS and in major NASBA projects such as mobility and CPA exam initiatives,” continued Costello.
Denise Hanley joined NASBA in 1997 and most recently served as vice president of PCS and president of Management Administrative Services (MAS). Throughout her tenure at NASBA, she has also provided leadership to the organization as chief information officer, director of information services and information services manager.
Under her leadership, Hanley was influential in collaborating with state boards, the AICPA and examination vendor Prometric (formerly Thomson Prometric) to successfully convert the paper-and-pencil format of the Uniform CPA Examination to computer-based testing.
“Denise’s passion for excellence will continue to serve her and PCS well as she builds upon the solid foundation of successes throughout her career,” said Costello.
As a 30-year veteran in the fields of management and information technology, Hanley has served in leadership capacities in the accounting, technology, warehousing and healthcare industries. Prior to joining NASBA, Hanley served as MIS project leader and supplier services systems manager with Cardinal/NSS. While working as product manager for HCA, Hanley embarked on the international arena and played a pivotal role in computerization of HCA international facilities in Panama and the U.K.
A native of Goodlettsville, TN, Hanley earned an Associate’s degree in Electronic Data Processing and a Bachelor of Science in Management of Human Resources from Trevecca College. Most recently, she received her M.B.A. from Lipscomb University.
