Accounting Jobs Recovery Slows

Unemployment edged down to 6.7 percent in November, but the accounting profession saw few of those gains, with its only upticks coming in the payroll services sector.

Cutbacks fall hardest at payroll agencies.

Overall, the total number of employees in the tax and accounting sector is dropping again, but not nearly as dramatically as at payroll agencies.

Profession loses four years of job growth in the first month of the Coronavirus recession, reversing years of steady gains.

Crushed by the Covid-19 pandemic, the tax and accounting profession has fallen below 1 million employees for the first time in two years – way below, and that may be just the tip of the iceberg, according to CPA Trendlines Research.

“It’s a good time to be a CPA,” says Brian Esko, and – with some notable exceptions – it’s hard to disagree.

The managing director and executive recruiter at Parker & Lynch and Ajilon Search points to an unemployment rate of roughly 1.5 percent for accounting, almost 300,000 new jobs created over the last 12 months and wages rising at roughly 3 percent annually.

Payroll is proving to a bright spot and women are making some impressive gains in our look at employment in the accounting profession. The latest CPA Trendlines Jobs Report also finds that tax preparation services employment spiked in March, even when seasonally adjusted.
